Commercial conversations

Sometimes a conversation with someone who sees things differently can be useful. Particularly when there is money, a business or several years of your life at stake.

I’ve spent much of my life building companies, investing, writing about markets and trying to work out what happens next. I’ve had successes and made mistakes. Both have been an education.

If you watch my videos or read my work, you probably have a feel for how I think. I’m curious, direct and quite happy to question something everyone else has agreed on. Occasionally that is exactly what is needed.

Perhaps you’re a private investor trying to find your feet, or wondering why your approach isn’t working. We could talk about how you make decisions, what you might be overlooking and what you’re trying to achieve. If money is tight, start with my free material. There is plenty there, and I would rather you kept your investing capital than stretched yourself to pay for a conversation.

If you have substantial investments, you may simply want to pick my brain. Explore an idea, challenge a conviction or talk through a possibility with someone who has his own money in the markets and an independent view.

For companies, I can bring an outside perspective to a difficult decision. That might involve strategy, technology, markets or an opportunity that doesn’t quite fit the usual model. I enjoy the questions that don’t have an obvious department to send them to.

And if you’re building a start-up, a wise old owl can sometimes be useful company. Founders need enthusiasm, but it also helps to have someone around who recognises a few of the holes in the road. I’ve fallen into enough of them to know where some are.

A single conversation may be enough. Sometimes there is a reason to stay involved.

If you think I might be useful, send me a short note about yourself and what you have in mind. We can work out whether there’s a fit and agree any fee before we begin.
